Exhibition of Sculptures by French Master, Jean Claude Novaro debuts in Pakistan for the first-time! Novaro´s sculptures are in major museums worldwide.

About Jean-Claude Novaro:
(Born in 1943, Antibes) Novaro is today recognized as one of the greatest glass blowers of our time. Jean-Claude Novaro’s works are in museums, galleries and private collections. In his professional life, Novaro has achieved several records. He has also integrated layers of 24cts gold and photo luminescent pigment inside the glass. He has experienced uninterrupted success as a solo glass artist.

Novaro is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest hand blown coupe ever made and had over 125 individual and collective shows of his work throughout the world, including France, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Saudi Arabia and the United States. Novaro invented new techniques, like his hand painting in between layers of glass. He is also a traditionalist in his insistence on working alone, letting every piece be a creation of his own hands.

His collectors include: Bill Cosby, Jacques Chirac, Mike Tyson, Phillippe Monet, Prince Albert ll of Monaco, Prince Sheikh Tariq Al Qassimi, Robert De Niro, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan, Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, Corning Museum, New York, NY, Global Art Venue, Seattle, WA. This is his first exhibition in Pakistan.

He is represented by Unicorn Gallery.

Art of glass
M S Kureshi

When the ponderous door of the cavernous furnace roasting at over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, is raised to handle a hefty blob of molten glass at the end of a blowpipe, the onslaught of blazing radiation strikes the glass-blower like the dragon’s fiery breath. Amidst such a blitz, a maestro such as Jean-Claude Novaro, finds himself comfortably poised to transform the fluid glass into a unique shape. The sudden rush of adrenaline and the artist’s high-spirited and agile handling of the blow tube, thereafter, yield amazing forms with every pre-meditated move that he makes!
The arrival of a dazzling exhibition of 30 glass artworks of Jean-Claude Novaro at the Unicorn Gallery, curated by Bertrand Epaud, has added yet another extraordinary enriching experience to the local audience. The exhibits are shaped mostly in the form of conventional and lidded angel vases, exotic urns and sculptures that endear the viewer with their mystifying pigments, dancing bubbles, gushing leaves and embedded gold-leaf abstracts.
Novaro was born in Antibes, France, in 1943 and started out as an apprentice at the age of 14 in a city called Biot, similar to the Venetian glass city of Murano, and became a master glass maker by the time he turned 20. Ten years hence, the prodigy established his own glass factory where he developed a known not only for its delicacy, but also for its magnitude, depth and complex layering of color within the clear glass, which is a difficult process.
Largely, a self-taught artist, he reinvents the identity of glass every time he conducts his routine with the blowpipe; a daunting ritual braved only by prodigious veterans. A juggler of molten pigments, Novaro is intensely consumed in the search for new frontiers, discovering revolutionary techniques, which are unheard of. In the video at the gallery, watching the artist’s articulated choreography at the sweltering aperture of the furnace holds testament to Novaro’s seasoned skills with the blowpipe. He enjoys full control over his imaginative and technical genius while exploring new possibilities in glass art, which has significantly enhanced public’s awareness to the creative potential of glass.
Novaro’s artistic personality is fuelled by his capacity to take appropriate action, vivid creative imagination and spontaneous intuition. His expertise in the use of fired glass materials is infallible and over the years he has harnessed the behavior of numerous substances. He has developed a taste for visually superior materials and always focuses on the aesthetics regardless of the weight, technique or the importance of the piece. The artist’s surreal visions emerge from his fiery spirit that is triggered by the intense warmth of molten glass, culminating into spectacular works of art. Novaro is known today in the glass community not only for his amazing technical and artistic abilities but for his constant search for new ways to stretch the capac ...
